Gruyers is the capital of the area of Gruyére in the canton of Fribourg. Gruyères is 810 m above sea level, 4.5 km south-south-east of the region capital Bulle. The historical township is placed on top of a secluded hill north of the Alps, in the foothills of mount Moléson and a flawlessly conserved old castle-village, remote on its cliff but within easy reach of Lake Geneva. The medieval township is an imperative tourist scene in the upper valley of the Saane River, and gives its name to the renowned cheese. It is one of Switzerland’s most picturesque sights and attracts flocks of day trippers all through the summer season, come to amble on the village’s only street and discover the imposing château.
