One of the oldest mosques in Hyderabad and one of the largest Mosques in India, Mecca Masjid is also named as Makkah Masjid. Built during the reign of Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the Masjid has a story behind its name. Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah bought soil from the holiest site of Islam Mecca and bricks were made of this soil, which were used to build the central arch of the mosque and thus giving a name Mecca to it. Fifteen arches support the roof of the main hall. Writings from Quran have been inscribed on the wall. The Masjid is large enough that accommodates around 10,000 worshipers.
