Atsuta Shrine is the most significant Shinto shrine in Japan. In this shrine one of three regal insignia, the "grass-mowing sword" was conserved. In Japanese legends, the sword initially belonged to the storm god Susanoo. When the celebrated hero Yamato-takeru set out to overpower the eastern provinces the sword was offered to him by the high priestess of the Ise Shrines, Yamato-hime. In the northern part of the wooded confines is the foremost shrine, Hongu, bounded by an enfolding wall. To the east is the reserve complex, a contemporary building which contains a large number of works of art that consist mostly of old and modern pictures, ceramics, jewelry and dramatic masks.
