In the language of local people, Observatory Hill is referred as “ Makal-Babu-Ko-Thaan” and is among the oldest places in Darjeeling. This authentic site is relevant to religious faith and is a good bond between the two religions – Hindus and Buddhists. There is also a magnificent temple of Lord Shiva named the Mahakal temple present on this spot. This spot of Darjeeling had undergone through an interesting history, according to which it is believed that at earlier times, a famous Red Hat Buddhist Monastery was erected on this place. But later on, it was totally destructed by some Nepalis and today, a common temple symbolizes a good harmony among the two religions.
