Pandalam is a small holy town near Sabarimala which is the place where Lord Ayyappa took birth as the son of the King of Pandalam. The place houses a sacred shrine namely Valiyakoikal Temple at the banks of River Achenkovil and the devotees generally take a stoppage at this place while climbing up to Sabarimala. During the well known festival of Makaravilaku in Sabarimala, the sacred jewels of Lord Ayyappa are preserved at Pandalam and then taken to the main shrine with a grand procession.
