Ayyappa Temple is the most prominent religious attraction and an important pilgrimage destination in Sabarimala. Set high amidst the lofty Sahayadri mountains and rocky terrain of the Western Ghats in Kerala, is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, the sacred deity of the region. The main festival of the temple is known as Mandalpooja held in the month of November-December and Makaravilakku in January that draws multitude of devotees from not only the country but also across the globe. Only males all allowed entering the temple and the females between 10 to 50 years is not supposed to go into the temple. After finishing the ardent climb up to the hill, the devotees have to climb 18 sacred steps in order to enter the sanctum sanctorum and these steps symbolizes human senses, emotions, qualities, knowledge and ignorance. The devotees believe that after ascending these steps, Lord Ayyappa will forgive their sins and bless them.
