Archeological excavations have exposed that Ras al-Khaimah was the seat of primordial civilizations. The old name for Ras al-Khaimah was Julphar. Ras-Al-Khaimah is an audacious place with the exquisiteness and traditions maintained through the centuries. The pearl-market was the chief earnings for the conurbation until the recession for demand in the early 20th C. The unearthing of offshore Saleh oil fields in the 1980's gave the conurbation a financial boost. The Khour Ras al-Khaimah separates the conurbation of Ras al-Khaimah into two parts. The western part, Old Ras al- Khaimah has the Ras al-Khaimah Museum and some governmental subdivisions. The eastern part, Al Nakheel, is abode to the Ruler's office, legislative departments and business companies. An overpass links the two parts over the Khour.
