Museum is a place of heritage which houses artifacts, documents or scientific objects for common man to view and understand. There are various types of museums. Indian Museum Kolkatta

This is one of the biggest and oldest museums in India. This was established by Dr Nathaniel Wallich in the year 1814 at the Asiatic Society. He was a Danish botanist. Interesting and curious objects and artifacts from India and around the globe is kept at this museum. The museum is divided into six sections - Archeology, anthropology, geology, zoology, industry and art. Among the well known exhibits, the Egyptian mummy, the Buddhist stupa from Bharhut, and the Ashoka pillar are popular ones. The Indian Museum also has an amazing collection of fossilized skeletons of dinosaurs and other primitive creatures.

The museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm for the general public. The ideal months for visiting this famous museum in Kolkatta are during the months of December to February when the temperature is lower in Kolkatta.

Jaigarh Fort Museum

This is one of the few museums worldwide which is located on a hilltop and is an erstwhile fort. The structure which houses the museum is a symbol of Moghul & Rajputana architecture. A number of artifacts’ at this museum is a significant testimony to the rich Rajasthani culture and heritage. One unique feature of this museum is the Shubhat Niwas which is the Hall of Warriors. It houses memoirs of meetings which were held between the warriors and the Generals to discuss the strategy and plans at times of war.

The museum is open from 10 am to 4pm and the best time to visit this is the months of October to February.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum, Mumbai

It is also one of the popular museums in India. The museum was founded by some citizens of Mumbai to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales in the early 20th century. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum is situated at South Mumbai near the Gateway of India. There are some rare artifacts of Indian history as well as objects which have their origins in other parts of the world. There is an amazing display of objects of the Mauryan dynasty.

Hawa Mahal Museum

This museum is located in the picturesque city of Jaipur within the Hawa Mahal palace. This was built by Maharaj Sai Pratap Singh in 1799. This is a honeycomb structure where thousands of windows have been made for the easy passage of air. The best time to visit it is the colder months of October to February.

Nehru Memorial Museum, Stock Palace Museum in Ladakh, State Museum of Tripura is some of the other famous museums in our country.
