History of Porbandar dates back to the 16th and 17th century and the place holds significant place in history chapters just because of being the birth place of Mahatma Gandhi.

 

Initially, during 10th century, the place was known as “Pauravelakul” and later on it was well-known as “Sudamapuri”. The ancient times of Porbandar begin at the time of Jetwas Rajputs and the port was considered to be the historic one of them. Jetwa Rajputs were the most powerful ruling dynasty which ruled over the place for 2000 years. They used to settle down in Porbandar during the 18th century and played major role in faming Porbandar as the main Port city.

 

Then, during the 19th century, the Walker treaty came into being and thereafter, the city started developing as the treaty brought peace and tranquility in the region. After that only, actual development of the Porbandar occurred and various trade affairs began with the Gulf countries and Africa. As per few legends, it is believe that the day of Rakshabandhan is the birth day of Porbandar and therefore, the people celebrate it as the birth anniversary of their home town.

 

The popularity of Porbandar not got ended here as the birth of legendary Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd October, 1869 added a lot to the fame of the city.
