Not everybody loves to eat fishes but most of us love watching fishes swimming in the cool blue waters. A sporting activity which is gaining popularity round the world is Fishing. Here we take you on a tour of the world of fishing.

The activity of catching fish in their natural surroundings is called Fishing. Fishing is done for recreational or commercial purposes. Catching fish as easy as it looks is not that easy. It depends on many factors – where and when you're fishing, the time of day, the season and weather, your experience level and your equipment.

Though anybody can wet a line with a fishing rod and bait, learning some basics about fishing technique will greatly increase your chances. So, even though you have the best fishing rod and reel in your hands, if you don’t know how to rig your tackle, how to cast, and work your lure or bait in the specific waters your fishing, at the end of the day, you'll just have a nice rod and reel in your hands.

Fish like the cooler water, but they also need the higher oxygen levels found in warmer water. So they'll migrate to an area right between the two levels of water called the thermo cline. The thermo cline can occur between 2 and 10 feet in depth, depending on the size of the lake.

In summer when the sun is scorching hot fish in shallow lakes, ponds and rivers become sluggish. The same thing happens in the winter when water temperatures are lower. So it’s important to remember the first rule of when to fish. Fishing will be slower when it's too hot or too cold.

Fish prefer early morning and evening sun to the bright sun of midday. Morning sun warms the shallows, creating more comfortable water temperatures for fish to feed. Late morning is best when the sun has had more of a chance to warm the shallows.

The two types of fishing are saltwater fishing and freshwater fishing. Fishing is an ancient practice that started about 40,000 years ago.

There are various fishing techniques like hand-gathering, spearfishing, netting, angling and trapping. The method of doing saltwater fishing is slightly different from fresh-water fishing. For fishing, the primary equipment that is needed is the pole, some line, bait to lure the fish, a sinker and a bobber. Usually for fishing the natural baits used are shredded pieces if chicken, worms etc.

To net a fish always remember to net the head first. Also important to remember is to keep the hooks sharp.

If you choose not to keep a fish once you’ve caught it, release it by first wetting your hands, gently unhooking the fish, and then immediately placing the fish back into the water. If a fish has swallowed a hook, cut the line close to the mouth and return the fish to the water, the hook will dissolve from stomach acid.

Fishing can be done in manmade lakes, ponds, rivers or seas. What is important for fishing is to improve the patience of an individual. This is a great family pastime especially when you set out for a fishing trip with your kids!
