About Somnath
Somnath, literally means ‘Lord of Moon’, is a major tourist’s destination in the state of Gujarat that creates a historical and religious appeal to the devotees and the tourists alike. The city has derived its name from the famous Somnath Temple which is one of the 12 jyotirlings of India dedicated to Lord Shiva. The sacred town of Somnath is located in the Prabhas Kshetra in Saurashtra lying on the west coast of Gujarat.
The city of Somnath found its mention in Vedas and Puranas and it is believed as the place where God Moon or Soma worshipped Lord Shiva giving Shiva the name of Somnath. The myths also said that Somnath is the place where Lord Krishna was shot by an arrow. The mythological and historical town of Somnath is still not affected by the modern luxuries and retains its historical charm and religious significance among the Hindu devotees.
The Somnath Temple is an eternal shrine which was destroyed five times by the invaders and constructed again and again at the same place. The ancient temple of Somnath was originally built by Somraj in gold, then by Ravana in silver, by Krishna in wood and by Bhimdev in stone. It has been one of the important pilgrimage destinations in the country that draws thousands of devotees to gather at the temple every year to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.
