Camel Safari - Things to do

India is god’s own country. The country has a diverse range of topography and climatic conditions from the north to the south and from the east to the west. There are many amazing places for sight seeing on this sub- continent.

Apart from the pristine ranges of the Himalayas in the north, the glistening sands and deafening silence of the desert dunes in India is an experience of a lifetime. There is no better way to enjoy the magic of the desert than on a camel safari. A camel ride is a great way to experience the dunes.

For those tourists who are looking for the ultimate desert adventure, there are a number of agencies who undertake organized camel safaris in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan.

The most popular place for camel safaris in India is in the Thar Desert surrounding Jaisalmer, in Rajasthan. There is opportunity for tourists to do camel safaris around Bikaner which is also in Rajasthan.

Some tour agents allow the tourists to decide on the number of days they would like to hire the camel and also the route that they would like to travel.

Other places where one can go on Camel Safaris is in the alpine desert around Leh, Ladakh, in the north. The camels used on these trips are the double hump Bactrian variety.

Some other popular circuits for camel safaris are Mandawa, Pushkar and Udaipur. Pushkar also annually holds the The Great Pushkar Camel Fair.

Going on the back of this humpy Ship of the Desert is initially a little overwhelming. But once you climb on top of the camel and get used to it, you will realize that there is no animal more docile than the camel.

The ideal time to go on Camel Safaris in India is the cooler and drier months from September to March. It is wonderful to experience the sight and sounds of the Rajasthan countryside on the back of the camel. Summertime in Rajasthan is unbearably hot and humid. So it’s better to avoid going on in the months of April – July.

In case you are doing a camel safari during the winter months from November – January then it is very important for you to carry an adequate amount of woolen clothing with you. This is because the desert gets very cold and chilling at night. If you are going through any organized travel agent then mattresses for sleeping may be provided but it’s still safer to carry plenty of sweaters, jackets, shawls and blankets to keep your self warm under the twinkling stars at night.

A large number of travel agents and tour operators in Rajasthan organize camel safaris. Most of these are close to the cities of Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Osian and Khimsar. Camel Safaris can range from 2 to 7 days. One can also plan for longer duration trips which are a month long. Shorter, day-long camel safaris which just about give you a glimpse of the desert are also organized.

Watching the sun rise or set over the sand dunes of Jaisalmer is one of the most spectacular experiences you have on your trip to Rajasthan.

So for one of the vacations take a bumpy rickety rolling ride on the back of the Ship of the Desert for an experience to remember.
