Jamnagar, the jewel of Kathiawar, is located on the coast of Gulf of Kutch in the Indian state of Gujarat. Jamnagar,earlier known as Nawanagar, is an industrial town situated at the confluence of the Rivers Nagmati and Rangmati. The city was founded by Jam Raval in 1540 AD and it became the capital of his kingdom. However, the city made considerable progress during the reign of Jam Ranjitsinhji in late 1920s. He paid great efforts in the development of the city and transformed the city using urban design elements.

 

Jamnagar has recently gained recognition after Reliance Industries established the largest refinery of the world. Moreover, the oil refinery of Essar Oil is also set up in the town. Because of these two important refineries, Jamnagar is called as the Oil City of India. Apart from an industrial hub, the city is also dotted with several wonderful historical and religious attractions such as ancient temples, shrines, forts, lakes, forests, hills and many more. The city is an important spiritual center and is called as the ‘Chhoti Kashi’ of India. The famous temples of the city are the Sun Temple, Bhid Bhanjan Temple and Hanuman Temple etc.

 

Jamnagar is also a home to various splendid forts and palaces that prove to be impressive attractions in the city and draw a number of tourists from all across the country. Some of the famous must visit monuments are the Darbargarh Palace, Lakhota Fort and Pratap Vilas etc. In addition, Jamnagar is also famous for tie and dye work and gold embroidery on fabrics.
