Ujjain is a holy and historical city located in the Malwa region of the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. Nestled at the banks of sacred Shipra River, Ujjain is one of the seven major Hindu pilgrimage sites in the country and draws a huge crowd of devotees on the occasion of triennial Kumbh Mela. The ancient city of Ujjain was known as Avantika in the earlier times and since time immortal, it has been a high- flying destination for religious and spiritual activities for more than 2000 years.

 

The city of Ujjain found its recognition in the mythological legends according to which a drop of nectar or amrit fell over this holy town during the ‘Sagar Manthan’ that made it a religious place in the country. It has also got remarkable mention in the Vedas and Puranas also. Not only this, there are a number of ruined monasteries and splendid sculptures depicting the credence of Buddhism in the city in the 4th century.
