History of Kumarakom

history-of-Kumarakom

Regarding the early history of Kumarakom, it was a quaint village which was ruled by the Vadakkancore kingdom and later by rulers of Travancore in 1750. The modern history of the town got started in the year 1878, when Alfred Baker, an English farmer came here and turned the marshy mangrove of the region into coconut plantations. Being caught by the beauty of the place, he decided to make it his home and also established The Baker House which was later purchased by the Taj Group of Hotels and constructed the famous and luxurious Taj Garden Retreat over here.
