Phimeanakas, Cambodia - Tower, Temple, Monarchy

Scenic, Temple

A huge, tiered pyramid of laterite and sandstone construction, it is the tallest climbable temple in Angkor Thom, and from the top, it offers a good view of the neighbouring area. The staircase on the western, or back side of the temple, affords the easiest way to mount to the top. Phimeanakas was the temple of the king, and the fairy tale says that in the golden tower that topped the temple, there dwelled a spiritual serpent that would transform itself into a woman at night. In order to guard the kingdom, and to prevent a calamity befalling the monarchy, the Angkorian kings were required to make love with the serpent every night.
