Nongsawlia is a popular religious destination in Cherrapunji and is visited by a number of visitors all around the world. The place is known for having the first church of northeast India and was established in 1848 by the welsh Missionaries. Moreover, there is also a small place inside it where Thomas Hones, a missionary introduced the Khasi alphabets which then extended to several parts of the Khasi and enhanced the Khasi literature. Many resorts and hotels are developed in this area that offer homely stay to the visitors.
