History of Kausani

history-of-Kausani

In ancient times, the quaint hill town of Kausani was known as Valna in which the prosperous kingdom of Kartikyapur was existed. This unexplored town became known to the country in 1929 when Mahatma Gandhi lived here and penned his commentary on Anasakti Yoga. Moreover, the place is also famed as the birth place of great Hindi poet Sumitranandan Pant.

The historical evidences suggest that people from the Kumaoni and Garhwali communities inhabit the earlier town of Kausani. Initially it was a part of Almora District under the rule of Katyuri king, Baichaldeo. Later on Almora was founded as a separate town soon after the foundation of Chand Dynasty in 1568 by Kalyan Chand.
