The Kamakshi Temple is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Kamakshi, one of the incarnations of Goddess Parvati.  Located in the heart of Kanchipuram, this temple was built by the Pallava King before the 7th century and was rebuilt by the Cholas during the 14th century. There is also a Shankaracharya shrine at this temple who was renowned as a great Hindu saint.The main deity, Kamakshi, is seated in a  Padmasana, a yogic posture signifying peace and prosperity, instead of the traditional standing pose.There are no other Parvati temples in the city of Kanchipuram, apart from this temple. Legend says that Kamakshi offered worship to a Shiva lingam made out of sand, under a mango tree and gained Lord Shiva's hand in marriage.
